Arana Sr. Going Into Attack Mode at Sonoma Nationals

SONOMA, Calif. (July 24) - Lucas Oil Buell Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana Sr. is bringing a new attitude to the NHRA Sonoma Nationals this weekend at Sonoma Raceway.

The 2009 champ is sixth in the points standings after last week's race at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, but he expects more, more out of himself and more out of his Buell.

"I'm going to have a different frame of mind in Sonoma: attack the races," Arana said. "I want to see what the outcome of that is going to be."

Arana has had a solid season, reaching one final round, two semifinals, and qualifying in the top half of the field five times, but he has been outperformed by his sons and teammates Hector Jr. and Adam at recent events.

In Denver, Adam qualified No. 1 and Hector Jr. reached the final round. Arana certainly is proud of his sons, but he wants to be right there with them, thus the reason for the change in attitude.

"More aggressive in general: tune-up, my riding, the lights, everything," Arana said. "Something's got to happen. I'm not ready to quit, and I don't like it when I lose. I'm frustrated; I'm not happy. I have to attack it."

The six-time Pro Stock Motorcycle winner reached the semifinals in Sonoma last year, but he would love to take that two steps farther this weekend. Weather is always a factor in Sonoma, though conditions usually make for quick elapsed times.

"As I remember it's always been cool, at least the night session," Arana said. "We get to run pretty fast over there, and conditions are good at sea level. I'm looking forward to going a little bit faster."

Qualifying for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals gets under way at 4:15 p.m. PDT on Friday from Sonoma Raceway. Qualifying wraps up on Saturday with two sessions starting at 12:15 p.m. Eliminations are at 11 a.m. on Sunday. ESPN will broadcast the qualifying show starting at 7 p.m. EDT on Saturday and ESPN2 will air the eliminations show at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
