Aasbo Claims Formula Drift Victory at Long Beach

Fredric Aasbo’s Toyota Corolla Hatchback

Long Beach, California (April 11, 2018) – In a stunning debut in his new Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Fredric Aasbo won round one of the 2018 Formula Drift Championship on the Streets of Long Beach.

In front of a sold-out crowd and with the Toyota brass in attendance, Aasbo piloted his Papadakis Racing prepared Rockstar Energy/Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla to victory following a hard-fought final round battle with returning Formula Drift driver Forrest Wang. The performance would cap off a stunning debut for the brand-new Corolla and Aasbo couldn't have been happier. "Winning a Formula Drift round is no easy feat, and to do it in the debut of a new chassis is almost unheard of,” said Fredric Aasbo. "This win is a testament to the team who worked so hard to get everything ready and our fantastic sponsors who make this all possible."

Overall the day would be a strong one for Lucas Oil supported drivers. In addition to Aasbo's win, Justin Pawlak and Matt Field would also enjoy strong starts to their season with Pawlak advancing to the top-8 round while Matt Field just missed out on a "Great Eight" appearance. All three driver's would qualify in the top seven positions in a stout 2018 debut for Lucas Oil supported teams.

"What a fantastic beginning to our relationship with Papadakis Racing and a great weekend overall for all three of our drivers," said Lucas Oil Director of Motorsports Tom Bogner. "I expected big things this year but I didn't realize we'd already be in victory lane after just one event. Justin and Matt also performed very well so I'm very excited and am looking forward to the next round in Orlando."

Pawlak would begin the weekend with a strong 4th place qualifying effort and advanced past Cameron Moore and Aurimas "Odi" Bakchis before meeting Aasbo in an all-Lucas Oil matchup. After a close battle that included a “One More Time” rerun, Pawlak would settle for a quarter-final finish. "Overall we finished 5th which is a great start to the season! " said Pawlak. "We wanted more but we had to face Fredric in the 3rd round and he ended up winning the event so there's no shame in losing to him. The Falken Tire/Roush Performance Mustang ran flawless all weekend and I'm glad to be able to come out of here in one piece."

Field would qualify in the 7th spot and get past Jeff Jones before a small mistake in his chase run against Alec Hohnadell would end his day in the second round. Still, Field was satisfied with the debut of his Falken Tire Corvette."It's still a brand new car but I'm very pleased with how the car ran," said Field. "It's different from what I'm used to but I think it caters to my driving style. The car is only going to get better and we're excited with the car's potential."

Teams will get two weekends off before heading to Orlando Speedworld in Orlando, Florida for round 2 of the Formula Drift championship on April 27-28. For tickets or more information visit www.formuladrift.com
