Big Hearts And Horsepower Remember Their Neighbors In Need During Legendary Chili Bowl Race Week

The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (January 11, 2019) - The Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire celebrates the 33rd Annual running of this legendary race with drivers, teams and spectators coming from all over the world to witness the best of the best vying for the elusive Golden Driller trophy. While the world is watching, drivers, teams and partners will also make a trip to deliver some smiles and encouragement to those in the care of The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center. The visit is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 PM at the hospital’s Child Life Zone.

The Child Life Zone was a vision of native Oklahoman Garth Brooks, and serves as a state-of-the-art, therapeutic play area inside a hospital where pediatric patients and their families can play, learn, laugh, and relax. The Zone is staffed by Child Life Specialists and Activities Therapists trained in meeting the psychosocial needs of children in health care settings. The Zone provides a place for these specialists to work with the children on development activities and provide social and emotional support that the children and their families need.

“In one of the biggest weeks of racing for many across the world, one the best aspects of Motorsports and it’s community shines thru when they still take the time to show support to those in need. Many have traveled far for this event, but the desire to support a child and family in need will always hit close to home.” – Greg Cozzo, Lucas Oil Products.

Drivers & teams invited to participate include three-time NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Champion Tony Stewart, two-time Chili Bowl Nationals Champion Corey Kruseman, Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Main Event winner and 2017 Pro Lite Rookie of the Year Christopher Polvoorde. Jill Wohlman, Vice President of Marketing at Super Clean, as well as Greg Cozzo from Lucas Oil Racing TV will also be on hand, bringing those big red cowboy hats for the kids (and the kids at heart). Notification of attendees will be made upon confirmation.

The Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals has become one of the most-watched events in motorsports annually, and has brought in drivers from many different series, including NASCAR, Motocross, NHRA and others looking for the elusive Golden Driller trophy, signifying the best of the best on dirt!

The Child Life Zone serves as a sanctuary. A place to learn. A hang-out. A place where a kid can be a kid. The Zone at The Children’s Hospital opened in early 2010. Modeled after the past NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman's End Zone, it is a special haven for child patients and siblings, where they can play, explore, learn, socialize and forget the worries of hospitalization. With more than 6,000 square feet, it houses a Theater Room, Kitchen, Teen Lounge, Infant to School Age Room, Library and Craft Space, Chalkboard Art Wall and a Family Resource Room. The Zone has more than 17,000 visits annually by patients, families and community volunteers.
