I have a 1987 Volvo 240GL with just over 270,000 miles on it that gets very little road time. When I got it five years ago the transmission was leaking. I replaced the cooler line fittings only to discover the trans was leaking from the main seal where the bellhousing attaches to the gearbox. To replace this is basically a full rebuild. About a year ago, I got a transmission flush in my 2005 Mercury Sable. However, upon doing so, it became apparent that the vehicle had never had the ATF changed in its 145,000 mile lifetime. So, all the clutch material that had basically allowed the tranny to operate normally was gone. The car would not stop bucking and slipping. My 2001 Honda Accord just passed inspection after had exhaust work and new rotors put on, when upon driving home my transmission slipped completely. 550.00$ isn't a lot of money but for me it's the difference between having Christmas and not having Christmas.(That's how much the bill was after the inspection.) A new transmission would mean I have to get an auto loan. Which would be very difficult because I'm on half time during the winter due to lack of work.
